My Digital Nomad HQ
How do you establish roots in your "home base" city as a digital nomad?
And why should you?
I’ve now been in Lisbon for 2 years and I've found that fostering local ties adds depth to my travels, grounds me, and opens doors to meaningful connections.
Here's 3 ways I've integrated into my local community in Lisbon 🇵🇹
1) Learning the local language
I’ve already completed my first class. Though English is common in Portugal, there are a few things that are just best understood when you use the language. For instance, the Portuguese have a rich culture of sayings and commentaries on life that don’t always translate to English. By learning Portuguese I am able to become more immersed in the cultural experience.
2) Finding my crew
A big goal in my travels has been to find other digital nomad entrepreneurs who understand this lifestyle. Already I’ve found many people in Lisbon who run their own businesses. Though all of us come from different parts of the world, we share a lot of the same challenges. If you ever feel alone out there, my own experience suggests we all deal with insecurities, family drama, and burnout. Some amazing entrepreneurs I’ve met in Lisbon include Emily Peilan and Emiliano Gutiérrez.
3) Donating blood!
Since 18, I’ve donated gallons (for my European friends, that’s 3-4 liters). No matter where you are in the world, the blood banks need help from those willing to give. Even better: blood donations save lives. I have a goal of 4 donations this year.
If you’re a digital nomad, what are some ways you’ve made your home base your “home”?
